Protesting women close down Benin-Lagos highway

Protesters on Monday obstructed the Uselu/Ugbowo segment of the Benin-Lagos expressway over plans by Egor Local Government Area of Edo to relocate traders.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the protesters, under the aegis of Uselu Market Women Association, were opposing
the mandate to move to bolt up stores worked by the council.

The women, showing placards, blocked both sides of the roadway, keeping drivers from proceeding with their trips.

Some of the women said the N1.2 million charged for the stalls was excessively costly for them, particularly given the sort of business most of them do.

The women said their issue was intensified by the activity of the council, which initiated the evacuation of their make shift shops on Monday.

Celena Okon, one of the market women, depicted the council's activity "as a demonstration of wickedness", in perspective of the current economic circumstance in the nation.

"What am I selling that you will constrain me to pay over a million naira for a single store? I trust they ought to consider the value of our businesses independently.

"Where do you expect a lady who sells just crayfish or tomatoes to get such an absurd amount of cash to pay, when in undeniable reality most are in desperate need of extra supports to develop their businesses," Mrs. Okon said.
