Chiefs arrest five for holding burial ceremony amid Oba's coronation

Five people including a musician were arrested on Saturday by palace authorities for holding an burial service amid the coronation celebration of the Oba of Benin, Omo n'Oba n'Edo Uku Akpolopkolo, Oba Ewuare II.

Primary School in Oredo Local Government Area of the state.

It was learnt that a few chiefs from the Oba's palace raged the scene and set "Umenhe" leaves (palm frond) on the food, drinks and canopies, demonstrating that an abomination had been committed.

The "Umenhe" leaves additionally connote a message of no trespass from the Oba.

A number of the visitors and relatives at the burial looked amazed and disappointed.

One of those arrested, who identified herself as Josephine Ehimwenma, claimed that they had been given the approval to proceed with the ceremony  by a few chiefs, since the main coronation ceremony had been finished.

Ehimwenma additionally guaranteed that the relatives of the deceased didn't know that the ban had not been lifted.

She said, "Three days back, I went to the palace and I met a few chiefs and let them know that I have buried my dad (and) that I simply needed to entertain my friends and well wishers. They said I should go ahead and requested "chop" money."

A source in the palace said the family was asked to get some sacrificial things for cleansing the land.

An individual from the Iwebo palace society, Chief Sunday Okhiokpamwonyi, clarified that the family would pay a fine and postpone the burial.

"Ewaise and Ogbelaka will advise her what to do to cleanse the land and to spare the family," he included.

Meanwhile, the ruler has promised to ensure peaceful coexistence among the various groups in the nation.

Oba Ewuare II talked on Saturday amid a special ceremony organized in his honour by the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa'ad Abubakar III, at the Oba's palace in Benin, the Edo State capital.

The ruler was delegated as the 40th Oba of Benin Kingdom on Thursday morning and got his staff of office from Governor Adams Oshiomhole at an elaborate ceremony held at Urho-Okpota hall.
