22,500 Nigerians Illegally Crossed Mediterranean Sea In 2016 - EU

The European Union has said more than 22,500 illegal migrants from Nigeria crossed Mediterranean Sea to Europe amongst January and September as against 23,000 in 2015. 

The Deputy Head of EU Delegation in Nigeria, Richard Young, revealed this on
Thursday at a media workshop in Abuja.

Young expressed worry that the quantity of Nigerians taking unsafe experience through Mediterranean to Europe inside nine months in 2016 was higher than the individuals who did same all through 2015. 

As per him, there has been enormous increment in transients crossing outskirt without the right travel record to Europe from everywhere throughout the world. 

Young said: "In 2014, the quantity of individuals traveling irregularly into Europe clinched 280,000 individuals; in 2015 it rose to 1.8 million in 2015. 

"From January to September 2016, the number is around 420,000; we are expecting that the number will ascend to 800,000 preceding the end of the year. 

"Inside this number, individuals originating from Nigeria in 2012 was 800, in 2013 the number was 2,900, in 2014 the number was 8,700 in 2015 the number was 23,000. 

"Furthermore, amongst January and September 2016 the number is 22, 500. 

While expressing concern that the individuals crossed Mediterranean on boat, he said, "3,700 drowned in Mediterranean Sea in 2016 alone, which demonstrated that one in 50 individuals drowned." 

Young, notwithstanding, said that the EU had set up measures to address illicit migrants from Nigeria.
