Customs seize rice worth N597.7bn


The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) said it seized rice worth N597.7 billion brought into the nation through the outskirts between January, 2016 and August, 2016. 


The Public Relations Officer of the administration, Mr Wale Adeniyi, in a
meeting in Abuja on Tuesday, said that the value of the product reallocated amid the period was higher when contrasted and N330.5 billion worth of rice seized in the same time frame in 2015.

He said that the expansion in the seizures meant that the customs was working zero resilience to unlawful importation of rice. 

Adeniyi said that the administration's rapprochement with its partner in the Republic of Benin additionally encouraged the spate of appropriation of rice along the fringes between both nations. 

"Our seizure on rice from January to August was N597.7 billion as against N330.5 billion amid the same time frame in 2015; this demonstrates a colossal increment. 

"The quantity of seizures from the measurements demonstrates that runners now realize that it is no more productive to get rice through the fringes. 

"Thus, since importation of rice is currently confined to the ports as even dealers with one pack of rice are captured. 

"We have various captures, especially those utilizing bikes, jackasses and even little vehicles.
