250 underage children released from jail, police headquarters and others by OPD in 1 year


The Office of the Public Defender (OPD) under the Lagos State Ministry of Justice on Monday said that it had secured the release of 250 underage kids from detainment, police headquarters and remedial homes in the state over the most recent one year. 

"Since 2016 till date, we have secured the release of 250 youngsters. "The office secured the release of 150 youngsters a year ago and 50 kids this year," Mrs Olubukola Salami, the Director of the office told newsmen in Lagos. Salami said that the office accomplished this through a continuous Program on Children in Conflict with the Law, a supported venture of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). 

She said that OPD was mindful to the financial privileges of poor people and helpless gatherings in the general public, incorporating ladies and kids in strife with the law. "When we went to some police headquarters and detainment, we found
there underage youngsters underneath the age of 18 and we as a whole know the woeful condition of our cells and penitentiaries.

"Indeed, even in the remedial homes implied for youngsters that are outside parental ability to control, we discovered kids who were in struggle with the law being obliged here.
