Polytechnics to commence strike on Nov.13


The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics has said it will embark on strike effect from November 13, 2017 to press for the execution of its concurrence with the legislature. It blamed the legislature for treating polytechnic education with hate and levity. 


Rising from a crisis meeting on Monday in Abuja, the ASUP National President, Usman Dutse, said his union would begin an inconclusive strike after the termination of its prior 21 days final proposal. 


He noticed that the appeasing meeting organized by the Federal Ministry of Labor neglected to deliver a positive outcome "in light of the fact that the Ministry of Education was not intrigued by settling the question." 

The ASUP pioneer likewise blamed the legislature for utilizing unending verification to defer the payment of entitlements of individuals from the union. 

He expressed that the union was not against the verification, but rather he included that it ought not be utilized to deny workers
their rights.

He said that notwithstanding the 21 days' notice given to the administration, it didn't think of it as important to address the requests for an enhanced subsidizing of polytechnic education in the nation. 

Dutse said, “Our union is therefore constrained to lament again that our sector is on the verge of collapse and needs all the emergency attention it deserves.

“Until now, it should be noted that the issues raised here today have been there since 2014 and none of them has since been concretely resolved to improve the sector.”

He recognized the issues to incorporate non-execution of the NEEDS evaluation report which prescribed the infusion of N6.5 billion into the polytechnic instruction in 2014, adding this has ascended to about N8bn now. 

He likewise specified the non-section of the Amendment Bill of the Polytechnics Act. 


"The deferral and impassion to the entry of this bill is seen as a ploy to rot turmoil and proceeded with emergencies in the segment," Dutse stressed
