Nigeria to flag off yam export to Europe Thursday


The Federal Government of Nigeria has said that it would formally flag off the export of yam to Europe on Thursday. 

Yam, a tuber crop, is a staple sustenance in Nigeria and is developed in a few regions of the nation. 

The export plan was uncovered by the Minister of Agriculture, Audu Ogbe, on Wednesday while tending to State House reporters after the meeting of the Federal Executive Council, FEC, led by acting president Yemi Osinbajo. 

Mr. Ogbe said 72 tonnes of yam will be sent out in the first period of the program to the United Kingdom. 

The minister said while Thursday's occasion is the formal take off of the program, a few tonnes of yam that were sent out before arrived New York on June 16 this year. 


Mr. Ogbe said by insights by the Food and Agricultural Organization, FAO, "Nigeria represents 61 percent of aggregate yam yield on the planet." 

He said Nigerian yam is popular over the globe, including "it is a shame not to discover Nigerian yam in those business sectors." 

"We don't consume all the yam we deliver, most go to wastage," he said. 

The minister said with a specific end goal to address the wastage, his service is chipping away at utilizing sun powered coolers to keep the yams at 14 degrees to make it reasonable for send out. 

"The Nigeria Center for Agricultural Mechanization in Ilorin is delivering a motorized yam furrowing machine that will be connected to a tractor to ease production," he said. 

He likewise said it was a direct result of poor stockpiling that made a few nations to dismiss Nigerian yam when endeavors to send out it was completed before. 

On expected salary, Mr. Ogbe stated, "It's just in about a month time that we will know how much the nation will gain after export to US, UK and China."
