I played while my dad was in Kidnappers' den

Nigeria's captain, John Mikel Obi on Tuesday uncovered he knew about his dad's kidnap hours before the Super Eagles played Argentina at the World Cup.

Mikel got the stunning news as he went on the team transport to the stadium in St Petersburg last Tuesday. A relative called him and revealed to him that he needed to call the kidnappers on an assigned number. At the point when Mikel did as such, he was requested to pay a ransom.

Mikel has revealed to Guardian UK that he couldn't trust in anybody at the Nigerian Football Federation – halfway in light of the fact that he would not like to be a distraction before the game – and how he asked himself whether he had the strength to play.

Pa Michael Obi was kidnapped as he made a trip to a memorial service along the Makurdi-Enugu freeway from Jos.

Mikel attempted to put the trauma to the other side and he played the hour and a half against Argentina. Nigeria lost 1-2 to a late Marcus Rojo objective to leave the competition.

"I played while my dad was in the hands of kidnappers," Mikel said. "I needed to stifle the trauma. I received a call four hours
before the game commenced to disclose to me what had happened.

“I was emotionally troubled and I had to make the decision about whether I was mentally ready to play. I was confused. I did not know what to do but, in the end, I knew that I could not let 180 million Nigerians down. I had to shut it out of my head and go and represent my country first. I could not even inform the coaches or NFF staff and only a very tight circle of my friends knew.

“I was told that they would shoot my dad instantly if I reported to the authorities or told anybody. I also did not want to discuss it with the coach [Gernot Rohr] because I did not want my issue to become a distraction to him or the rest of the team on the day of such an important game. As much as I wanted to discuss it with the coach, I could not.

"Gratefully, my dad was securely discharged on Monday evening. I thank the police inspectors for their rescue endeavors and the help I've gotten from loved ones. Lamentably, my father is presently in healing facility getting treatment because of the torment he got amid his capture."
